Halloween

Oookay, Vicky wants to clebrate her birthday on Halloween (it was her bday in July, but we always have the party after the summer holidays). She wants to watch a horror movie with her friends - one that is suitable for 12-year-olds. I've been rifling through my movie memories, but I can't think of anything suitable. We've seen Monster House, and we've seen Nightmare before Christmas. We're looking for something a bit more exciting, but not too scary. *sigh* Do you guys know movies that are suitable?

Also, i will make wieners that look like chopped off fingers and eggs that look like spiders. If you have any more suggestions for creepy fingerfood or Halloween dishes, I'd greatly appreciate it....

I am not looking forward to that party because hubby and daughter #1 will be in Ireland at the time, which means I am on my own with a dozen twelve-year-olds. Swell.

Lo and behold, I found a scribbled note with my fanfiction.net password - which I'd lost ages ago. So, curious, I checked out traffic - and was happy to see that people are still reading my stories. I also found some new feedback - which means that all the feedback notifications must have been sent into oblivion. Apparently, the email adress I used there is no longer valid. Oops. Which means I am very guilty of not answering feedback for donkeys years. *cringe* And yes, I know I could have asked for a new password. I don't know why I never did. Somehow I had been convinced that no one read my stories anymore. And that fanfiction.net was more or less dead. Must have been around the time when I started working regularly - which only goes to prove that RL can seriously cramp your style. I am a dork. *hides*

ETA: Now I remember another reason why I stayed away from ffnet... there was this change in the terms of Service, something to do with ratings. They no longer supported NC-17, I think. I took down the pornier stuff and out of indignation I stayed away and only posted on LJ....

I started archiving my fanfiction at AooO. I wonder what the netiquette is for backdating stories. Do I have to find out when the stories were posted first and backdate them? I haven't used a lot of tags on my lj, so finding out the original posting dates sounds like quite a chore. On the other hand I don't want to give the impression that the stories are new when they are not...
Any thoughts?
estepheia: (Forget Me Not)
Woke up today feeling utterly nostalgic. So I browsed through some of my very very old LJ memories. I meant to find a link to a vid catatonic 1242 once made for me. I felt like reposting the link, to spread the nostalgia around, but it seems she's disappeared. *sigh* And then I looked at the dates in my LJ - I set it up in 2002! I had it for ten years!

While browsing through it, I unearthed kerfuffles, plagiarism cases, a pandoraverse drabble that I'd completely forgotten about, a very sad G/E drabble that I'd forgotten, recipes, rec-lists etc. And many lovely posts from many people who are still active on LJ. HUG!

I also found links to ebook versions of Things Present - Things Past and Who's Afraid of Red, White, Green? It seems hubby never took them down. Unfortunately, the formats are not compatible with my kindle app or my ibook app. Maybe I should look into the problem... I wouldn't mind creating a handful of anthologies of my fanfic... I'd start with the Pandoraverse, I think....

Chapter 12 )
estepheia: (Writing)
I am writing fanfic, yay!
I have already killed one road block and am making a lot of progress. Not sure why, but the muse is with me today!
Does anyone remember in what context Giles wore his ridiculous burgundy Wizard's hat and robe? Was it a Halloween episode? It was something to do with the shop. The first opening? I'm sure I can find out if I search the net, but that always gets me side tracked.... Not good, when the muse is around....
estepheia: (It's only a movie...)
So. Hubby and I just watched Cabin in the Woods.
Memo to myself: never watch Joss's stuff in German. Somehow the German voices felt wrong. Unfortunately, the movie theatre only showed the German version.
Second memo to myself: do not watch slasher or zombie movies - even if Joss makes them.
I suppose the meta is more fun if one watches the iconic movies of the genre on a regular basis.... I certainly recognized a handful of the references (I watched Evil Dead ages ago, and back then it scared me so much, I actually looked away until friends said it was safe to watch again), but i guess you have to be a fan to enjoy them.
I fail to see the fun in buckets full of blood and I hate character death. Friends lent me their walking Dead DVD but it's still sitting on my shelf, because zombies = scary.
So, CitW was fun, often clever und sometimes surprising, sometimes predictable. I don't regret watching it - but I won't rush out to buy the Bluray. Avengers on the other hand....

Happy Birthday [livejournal.com profile] romanyg!
I hope it's a good one!

Ha! For once we can watch clips on the BBC website - normally they shut us Germans out for some inexplicable reason...
Can't wait for the new season to start - and the daughters are just as jittery.
The little clips are cute but such tiny morsels!

Batman III

Aug. 11th, 2012 12:35 am
estepheia: (It's only a movie...)
I finally got to see The dark Knight Rises tonight. Unfortunately, the dubbed version, but still. I'm glad I went to see it. I enjoy Nolan's movies. They usually have a good story, interesting dilemmas, good action scenes and characters. I also like his casting (except for Leo di Caprio in Inception), Prestige is the one that I found most jaw-dropping and disturbing, but the Batman saga is truly fascinating. It raises interesting questions: what can you do when the world has become too complex, frightening, beaurocratic and unjust? Blow it up? Accept it but spend your money on charity? Give more power to police and gouvernment? When even well-intended research projects may lead to death and destruction, when the people you trust turn out to be the enemy, what can you do? What can anyone do?
Of course Joss Whedon nailed it way back, when he made Serenity. "If you can't do something smart, do something right".

All the power that Batman has, his weapons, his money - only Bruce Wayne's integrity keeps them from becoming means of oppression - until they are stolen. Ultimately, what you have doesn't count, the important thing is what you do. Like not taking the easy way out...
I'm too tired to go on, let's just say I really enjoyed the movie....

BTW, I saw the Hobbit trailer again, with the singing in German, and boy, did it give me goosebumps! Seriously, goosebumps of sheer happiness. I can't wait to see it. And I am very glad PJ is making it a three-parter. I don't want to be rushed through the plot, I want to immerse myself in the world again.

New Icon

Aug. 4th, 2012 06:40 pm
estepheia: (Ten)
I have a brandnew icon, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] willowgreen, who made this out of a drawing that my daughter Katharina made. Whooohooo! Thank you, willowgreen!!!! *hug*
estepheia: (Doctor Who)
We've watched all the Doctors 9-11 episodes with the kids. Both love the doctor, little one likes 11 best, but my heart beats for 10...
Daughter #1 made a fantastic anime style drawing of the doctor (10), which she doesn't allow me to show you guys, because she's worried she might get into legal trouble. I'd love to print it on a T-shirt, too, but she won't let me.
Do you guys have any experience with the DW franchise? Are the BBC happily suing people for designing their own t-shirts? What are the rules? Is it legal to print DW t-shirts if you don't make money with it?
If it were Joss's fandom, I wouldn't worry, but I'm not sure about DW.
She's given me permission to make an icon out of it, but I have no clue how....

Also, I'm yearning for new episodes. *sigh* I like Amelia Pond, but I adore Rory. Strange how the DW/TW world is full of extraordinary ordinary people. I think the cast that surrounds the doctor is what raises the series above many other scifi series....

Help

Jun. 5th, 2012 07:28 pm
estepheia: (Forget Me Not)
A friend of mine is looking for a good short short story about racial discrimination in England or Australia for an exam in her A-levels group. I haven't really read that many (non sci-fi) short stories, so I thought I'd check out all the learned people on LJ. :) If you could help out, I'd be much obliged. :)

Haven't written for about a week since we are currently redecorating/reorganizing our home. We inherited some furniture from my aunty and decided to get rid of some of our old shelves to make room for it. Now all rooms look like a warzone... oh well, at least it's a great opportunity to chuck out books, comic books and board games that we no longer need.
estepheia: (Doctor Who)
We've just finished watching S4 (4 epis in one sitting) and I can say with pride: I have successfully turned my daughters into Doctor Who fans. :) They both adore Ten (well, who wouldn't) and they love Captain Jack. #1 loves Donna, #2 loves Rose, both hate Donna's mom....
K. has a Ten wallpaper on her computer where he's holding a cat in his hand, and she found a band on youtube who base their music and all their lyrics on the Doctor Who canon. V. has started reading (German) fanfic (something with a pre time war parrallell universe with the doctor and the master... )
I must say, I'd forgotten how good S4 is. Definitely my favourite.
Oh, and have you seen this? K. found it....

One thing I hate about myself is that I'm more of a glass-half-empty person, but DW has a way of making things better.... Never fails to cheer me up....

A wonderful speech! Neil Gaiman is awesome!

estepheia: (Spike and Ethan)

Because [livejournal.com profile] shapinglight asked for it:
Two more vids by 1ravenrayne, who produced the vid I posted the other day. I don't know where the additional footage in the first vid comes from, but it fits very well. I am not that fond of the second one, among other things I don't like the song, but it's always nice to see the G/E footage again. :) I wish we had seen a bit more of Ehan. Oh well, that's what we have vids and fanfic for... Which makes me wonder: Has anyone ever produced a Spike/Ethan vid?
