For those who don't know what I'm talking about: several authors have used their LJ to look at the first and last lines of their stories.

Looking at my opening and closing lines makes me realize I know nothing about this. I follow my instinct, but I never really paid attention to the underlying theories. If there are any. I'm sure there are lots of clever books on creative writing that have a lot to say about beginnings and endings, I just never read any.
Incidentally, during a poetry workshop we were once given a theme and an opening line from a poem by T.S. Eliot and we were asked to write a poem based on both. It was interesting to see that having an opening line got us into full swing in no time. No shying in front of the first hurdle. :-)
