Only Words

Drum roll. Here it is, the final part of my WIP of many years. Can't tell you how relieved I am. I think I may have had problems letting go (stories are so like children), because the chapter got longer and longer. Ordinarily, I'd say "murder your darlings", but I think in fanfic it's okay if there's a lot of angsty dialogue and not much else. ;) So, yeah, this could have been shorter, but I have to go with Mark Twain here: I honestly don't have the two years it would take to make this shorter. :D

Anyway, if you've been reading this from the beginning (and are still here): Thank you for your patience. If you're new to this: Fasten your seatbelt for a little roadtrip.

I am writing fanfic, yay!
I have already killed one road block and am making a lot of progress. Not sure why, but the muse is with me today!
Does anyone remember in what context Giles wore his ridiculous burgundy Wizard's hat and robe? Was it a Halloween episode? It was something to do with the shop. The first opening? I'm sure I can find out if I search the net, but that always gets me side tracked.... Not good, when the muse is around....

First year
Staying at school over the Christmas holidays isn’t so bad. No shouting, no abuse. Sausages and grilled mushrooms for breakfast and scones with jam for tea.  Not like the scraps he got at home.

And there’s so much to do. He explores drafty corridors, climbs stairs that seem to lead nowhere or wanders through the dank dungeons and cellars underneath the lake. There’s a library full of books and a potions lab that he’s allowed to use.

It’s true, he misses Lucius and some of the other Slytherins, even envies them a little.
But most of all, he misses Lily.

The questioning always starts around Thanksgiving and lasts well into December. “Have you heard from Danny? Still in China, is he?” the neighbors ask. And: “Will he be home for Christmas this year?”

Pitying glances, when she answers that no, her son is not in Tibet anymore, and no, he’s not coming. Later, she’ll overhear them at the supermarket. Snatches of conversation like: “A shame. He had such good grades.” –  “Tibet? Isn’t that where all that heroin comes from?”

She never shows them the postcards. “Learning to play the didgeridoo. Oz” the last one said.

At least he’s safe there.

I wrote a drabble-y ficlet. Yay! Okay, so it's short, and based on a fragment that I wrote ages ago. Oh well. Luckily, I never throw anything away, not even story fragments. It's nothing much, I know, I'm terribly rusty, but it's better than nothing.

"When I grow up, I want to be a wizard." Words spoken in absolute earnest back in 1963, long before anyone had heard of Harry Potter. Ethan had been 8 years old at the time, and convinced that magic was the only way to make the boy next door give back the cricket bat he'd stolen.
 
The cricket bat was eventually returned – without the help of wizardry – but the words, once spoken, rippled outwards like waves on the surface of a still pond, working their charm.
 
"This is Ethan," his mother would introduce him, playfully toying with the string of pearls around her neck, "and he wants to be a wizard." Inevitably, the anecdote was followed by laughter. Why nobody laughed when other children said they wanted to become an astronaut, a race car driver, or a horse-breeder in Canada, Ethan never understood.
 
He was twelve when he came across the Book of Janus on a flea market. It was a smelly old tome, written in a language he couldn’t understand, but it felt burning hot to his touch, and the tingle it sent through him spoke of power. Ethan stole it without hesitation.
 
At the age of thirteen he cast his first successful spell.
 
At the age of fourteen he stole his mother’s voice, forever.
