Lost finale

Of course I avoided all mention of the Lost finale after it aired to avoid getting spoiled. Now I feel the need to talk about it, but I'm putting my ideas and thoughts behind the cut:
Is it just me or was the finale a) heavy-handed and b) dull and c) trying a little too hard? The first few times members started to crop up in each other's flashbacks it was amusing, interesting even, but during the finale the flashbacks seemed gratuitous. The writers tried very hard to 'embroider' the main plot with references/details like the polar bear comic, Sawyer's letter, Locke's wheelchair, Sun's watch, etc, and it's not such a bad idea in case some people have missed out on some of the episodes, but truly, it got old fast.
Yes, I'm hooked, I want to know what's up and what happens next, but I'm not entirely confident that the second season will deliver...
So, Pandora's Box has been opened. According to the legend it contains not just all plagues and mortality, but also hope - as Locke reminds us. Then there was the shot of the three women discussing fate(s). And words like destiny and luck were tossed around. The Island (capitalized because there is something sentient here) giveth and taketh away and then giveth again - in Charlie's case tons of heroin. If it were a person or deity, I'd say the Island revealed itself to a handful of people, trying to appear benign, but if necessary the kid gloves come off and the Island takes what it wants by force or uses violence and all means possible, no matter how insidious, to get what it wants.
I wouldn't be surprised if Locke was right and something was testing him. Only I'm not sure the Island is the good benign entity he thinks it is.
We may end up with a resolution of Stephen King caliber - remember the book It? Fabulous, creepy, chilling - until we discover that there's a funny alien spider thingie behind Pennywise the clown. I haven't been to any of the boards that are discussing what's behind the events on the Island, so I'm not sure what the going speculation is, but my bets are on a) an alien non-human entity or maybe something like a ghost (like the hotel in Shining that acts like a psychic battery) b) virtual reality like that of 13th Floor or Daniel Galoye's Simulacron 3 or c) they're all dead and are being 'processed' to determine their final destination. I don't think I like either of my explanations. I really hope that the creators of the show have better ideas than I have... I'm curious to see what happens.
Wouldn't be surprised if the hatch gave the survivors a nasty virus/disease to struggle against. Remember Poe's story about the Red Death? Well, a mysterious plague might well whip some of the survivors into a nasty religious frenzy. I wish I didn't have to wait four months or so to find out more.
Oh, and if they kill Sawyer I'm gonna be cross!
