Painful, with that threat of memories rising up to overcome the manners that Giles falls back on. Whether you intended to or not, there is a tone of slashiness to this which works very well. There isn't a lot of Giles/Angel fic, and even less that's happy. Of course, nobody seems to remember that during the summer when Buffy was gone, the Scoobies and Giles took care of things on the Hellmouth, more or less. I imagine that they would have a vampire lurking in the background to make sure that they were alright.
But yes, at this point in time, this is all that they can give each other, or that they will accept.
