I'm beginning to wonder if the sole reason why Dawn was introduced into the story-line was the plan to eventually use her to close the hellmouth. I think you're on to something -- the line from Joyce that "Buffy won't chose you" and the strange, offhand mention of the key? Yes, Dawn is being set up for something big.
