estepheia: (Shades of Grey)
A friend of mine wrote a truly interesting original Sci Fi story, but whenever I open the file to read it, a few minutes later my compi shuts down. How come this story overheats my laptop computer every time I open it? 57 pages is long, but I remember having longer stories open. *grumbles*

I wrote a poem today, inspired by some of the lines of poetry quoted to me several days ago. I still have a few more poetry fragments in my head. I am supposed to organize an open mic event next month for our local creative writing club, so I better get a few poems slapped together, in case nobody else shows up to read...

All this talk about NaNoWriMo makes me twitchy and unhappy. I tried it last year -- the result was pitiful. I still think it's a wonderful idea, but it does not work for me. I wish it did.
And why the hell am I always tired in the evenings? I used to stay up till 4 am to write. These days my brain shuts down at midnight. *fizzle*
*sigh*

PS: It's already the 7th where I am, so I'll be the first to congratulate Tania aka [livejournal.com profile] itsabigrock. Happy birthday! *HUG!*

Question to you native speakers of English:
When do you use nobody and when do you use no-one? And what about anybody and somebody?
I always wondered about this and my dictionary doesn't help.

I think I made some progress with Dealing. After a long time of dithering which POV to go with, I finally decided to switch POVs in mid-scene, because I want to obscure one character's motives. The section I am working on is difficult because I don't want to spend too many words on boring descriptions of what the characters do. Obviously they don't just stand around talking, but if the description of body language and movement 'on stage' gets too long, the pacing goes off and the reading gets boring. The story is already leisurely... Jeez, I am in chapter 7 and I've only covered two days so far. *bangs head on desk* Why oh why do I find fast forwarding so hard? Maybe it's because I hate sections that sum up events and patiently explain things to me? TV is so much easier. You show a place, then the end of an activity and thus you indicate what has been happening between one sequence and the next. You can use harsh cuts or slow fades to black. Sometimes I am painfully aware, how much faster things happen on a visual level. One more reason to put as much deliberation into the language as possible.
Whenever I look at the Buffy dialouge databased I am reminded how short most utterances are on the show. Very few characters use subordinate clauses in their speech. Trimming down dialogue to snappy five-word-utterances is hard work!

I'm thinking about posting my autumn poem in my LJ. Can't decide if I should post it friendslocked or not.... I'd like to get a bit of reassurance (or suggestions) before I read it in a public reading. *dither*

I have a sudden, overwhelming urge to watch the final Jayne/Mal scene in Ariel again. God that show was brilliant. *sigh*
I haven't posted a Firefly--- waaaaaah! post in a long while, so I thought I'd share.

So tell me, which is YOUR favorite Firefly scene? Where did the acting blow your mind? Which scenes make your gut clench with emotion, which ones make you choke up? To make the choice easier: You may pick three. Tell me the scene, and gimme the reason. Come on guys, you know you want to! Let's all bask in the afterglow of watching this fabulous show.

My choices are behind the cut )

So I'm watching Dark Angel with hubby (we borrowed both seasons on DVD) and the credits rush past us, when suddenly a name leaps out at me: Doris Egan - credited as Story Editor. AKA [livejournal.com profile] tightropegirl and moments later Joe Molina is credited as one of the writers on the show. And I frown, dig out my Firefly DVDs and it says Joe Molina there - he wrote Ariel. I used to be 'I know that guy/girl from somewhere' girl when watching telly, pondering where I'd seen an actor before. Looks like ME turned me into someone who instinctively reads the names of the writing stuff instead of the actors' names. I like that.

I spent most of the day putting 50 Games Workshop magazines up for auction on ebay. Now please all cross your fingers. I want to make lots of money with these. Most of them are between ten and twenty years old. I'm hoping for something in the range of 250 EUR, because I need to buy myself some new clothes. Hubby shrank one of my sweaters in the wash (yup, he goes through extremely helpful phases), and two of my favorite sweaters have stains that won't come out. Meh.

Plus I should think about getting the kids' Christmas prezzies early. Saves so much stress in December. So, like I said, keep your fingers crossed. And what will I do? Search the cellar for more stuff to auction off. Yup. *puts on resolve face*
