estepheia: (It's only a movie...)
I finally got to see Cube on DVD. Yeah, I know, it's old, but still worth recommending. This movie is quite an experience. A true thriller in the best sense of the word. Very clever, with a very good script, good acting, effective music, and very few expensive effects. Brilliant. I wish there were movies like that: concerned with good story-telling, instead of wow-y special effects. I haven't been so desperate to find out what happens next in ages. At the same time I was so worried for the characters that I wasn't sure I really wanted to watch. Recommended (unless gory stuff squicks you).

ETA: Wow! My Lost feed on torrent is coming in at 80KiBs. *reels from whiplash* That has got to be record speed.

Gacked from [livejournal.com profile] essene who gacked it from [livejournal.com profile] rahirah:
List 5 of your favourite Christmas movies/tv specials that you cannot go without watching during the holidays.

1. Little Lord Fauntleroy
The version with Sir Alec Guiness, a British TV adaptation by my favorite TV director Jack Gold. Wonderfully schmoopy. The kid is a bit grating, but all the other characters are wonderful, and the argument between the old Earl and Ceddie's mom, when they meet by chance on the road, that is utterly priceless.

2. Scrooged
With Bill Murray. It hasn't aged well, but it still has its moments. Favorite bit? The ghost of the present Christmas slamming a toaster into Bill Murray's face. I love that actress, even though I alway forget her name (she is also adoring in a movie calle Flashback with Dennis Hopper and Kiefer Sutherland).

3. Drei Nüsse für Aschenputtel - Cinderella
A two-part Czech movie. For years the Czechs made the best fairiy tale adaptations ever, with beautiful actors and nifty little ideas. This Cinderella gets three different outfits from three magical hazelnuts, a dress for the ball, a hunter's outfit with crossbow and Robin Hood hat, and finally a wedding dress. She has a wonderful white horse. The movie is set in a winter landscape and on an old farm. Czech fairy tale movies are always populated by many lesser figures, like the whole kitchen staff and servants, people with a heart of gold, compared to the evil capitalist stepmother. Yes, the stories are biased, but not gratingly so. I loved these as a kid and I still adore them. This particular one is may absolute favorite.

4. Groundhog Day
Bill Murray at his best.

5. One of the first two Die Hard movies.

6. The Snowman
Because the music rocks. I love singing Walking in the Air.

Many many thanks to the kind anonymous person who gave me paid LJ time. *hug* It's greatly appreciated. Thank you. *beams*
A while back I started work on a post-NFA fic. I posted one chapter, but then went back to older WIPs that were more entitled to a continuation.

Here's a tiny exerpt from an unposted chunk that takes place after the death of the dragon. It's not much, and still a bit too plain (it needs dialogue), I know, but I hope you like it anyway, whoever you are. I'd add to it, but today my brain is offline. Maybe I'll do something with this chunk at a later date. Here's hoping.
