Film Review: Constantine
Feb. 16th, 2005 11:24 pmBefore I start to hip-hip-hurrah I have to mention that I never read the comic book the movie is based on, and that I probably never will. I can only say this: the movie does not feel like it's based on a comic. Constantine felt like God's Army meets Angel Heart meets Sandman (the comic) - it was pretty (in an occasionally icky way), noir-ish, funny, formulaic, (and therefore a little predictable but also consistent), just gadgety enough, and occasionally surprising. I loved every single minute of it. I loooved Tilda Swinton as Gabriel. I loved the whole cast. Keanu Reeves is well-cast, his *cough* mostly minimalistic acting suits the story and the character.
Does that mean you have to rush off and watch it? Well, I should probably mention that I loved Daredevil (mostly because of the whole 'a day in the life of' sequence), loved Minority Report, enjoyed (but didn't love) Hellboy. Also, I always had a thing for Christian Fantasy stories, i.e. stories in which Archangels walk the earth and in which there is a layer of reality underneath our own. If you like that sort of thing, then yeah, I think you will probably enjoy this movie. Personally, I can't wait to get the DVD.
I wonder if there will be fanfic. And I so need a picture of Gabriel for an icon. Or maybe a shot of Gabriel and Constantine... *dither*
