Smallville

Geekomainia! I got bitten by the Smallville bug! Okay, I already talked about that. But I haven't mentioned yet that I smile insanely when Lex Luthor/Michael Rosenbaum is on the screen. Did I say that he's not a hottie? Did I really? Nuh. Um...
Anyway, liking the show is a bit of an embarrassment, because where Buffy is transgressive, subversive and playful, Smallville is conservative, blatantly law&order and heavy-handed. I get that a show about Superman would paint the world more or less black and white. I get that a show about a powerful being's roots would be about family and responsibility.
But why, oh why, are his parents so incredibly sickening? I just watched episode 2.09 in which Clark's Über-mom sappily declared that her family is so much more important than her job and that she is willing to give up a job she enjoys and the much needed income for the sake of the family. Bleagh. She already gave up her career in law to marry that salt of the earth farmer and the martyrdom just never stops. The way this ideal mom is portrayed really offends me.
Clark's father is just as bad. His overweening pride makes me want to hit him with a shovel. He doesn't accept checks from Lex even when he's entitled to them? Won't talk to his wife's father? More pride than brains.
The Kent ethos is seriously getting on my wick. I think one of the most important skills we have to learn in our lives is the ability to make compromises - and with good grace. The we-always-know-what's-best attitude they spurt is diametrically opposed to the ability to communicate with and understand other people.
I seriously wouldn't want to live with these people. [/rant]
