Talked to
drcoulter on the phone last night. If all goes well I'll see her on Saturday. Whoohooo!
Have to say I enjoy both Lost and Veronica Mars - but I have no urge whatsoever to go fannish. I miss my Jossverse shows, all three of them. Yes, there are other good TV shows. And no, they're simply not as good.
I would like to watch the fourth Season of Smallville but I still haven't been able to find epi 3x18. No idea why that particular epi is so hard to come by. I also got stuck watching Alias - after the first season. Couldn't find S2 feeds. Tried Deadwood. Liked the first epi well enough, but not enough to download more (yet). Saw 4 or 5 epis of Dead Like Me and a few epis of Wonderfalls - I liked both shows but for some reason I find it hard to genereate genuine enthusiasm. Well, at least Lost is intriguing. I particularly liked epi 4.
Still, I want my vampires back! And do I really have to wait till April for Serenity to hit the movie theatres? Bugger.

Date: 2004-10-19 02:43 pm (UTC)Well, I suppose to feel fanficcish one actually needs to have info on the characters. Lately, a lot of shows are primarily exercises in information management, i.e. by withholding information from the viewers the producers of the shows jealously guard their possession of the characters. The Jossverse characters always felt real after only a few episodes, even those who merely had a few cameos. We were given enough info so we could play with them.
In Lost a lot of characters are kept at the fringes, they don't even have names. They are a reservoire for the producers of the show, not for fanficcers.
The same applies to the setting: we know so little about the world the characters live in that it's hard to move confidently in the setting. We don't know what else is on that island, and we don't know who killed Veronica Mars' friend.
On BtVS we often did not know what the antagonists were doing, but we always knew how the main characters would behave....
And we could rely on the metaphor level to tell us things we might otherwise have missed.
*sigh*
