estepheia: (Tina and Toyah)
[personal profile] estepheia
Hi guys, thank you so much for your prayers and kind words and all the good vibes you've sent to us. All your good wishes appear to have helped, because once Viktoria was in hospital care, she improved quickly. (I hope it's okay if I don't answer individually, I don't have a lot of time right now...)
Anyway, here's the full story:
On Monday Viktoria had started throwing up, she couldn't even keep water inside, on Tuesday she stopped throwing up, but she refused food and drink, and she had a high fever so we took her to the family GP who wrote us a prescription for the local children's hospital. At the hospital the doctors immideately put her on a glucose and natrium mix, feeding her intravenously, because she was dehydrated and burning up her fat reserves. I stayed in hospital with Toyah, helping her go to the toilet and cuddling her whenever necessary. At first she was weak like a kitten and a little delirious, but the IV helped quickly. Today she complained about the food and she was taken off the IV. She is eating pasta again and drinking water. She likes the nurses and is brave whenever they draw blood for testing (the kids get a little prezzie, like a ring or toy bracelet for each prick of the needle).

Tonight I'm sleeping at home again, but I'm going back to the hospital tomorrow. If everything goes well, she'll be realeased tomorrow or on Saturday. Toyah didn't mind when I left, she was quite happily watching television.
The past two nights were stressful, frequently interrupted by complicated maneuvers (picture moving a small child together with her bulky IV contraption to the toilet at 4 am and you know what I mean). I am happy to be at home and to be drinking one of hubby's marvellous lattes.
In a minute I'll grab the eldest daughter, wash her hair and snuggle with her, since she feels woefully neglected.

Did I miss a lot?

ETA: I forgot to mention the final diagnosis: Toyah got hit by the Rota Virus, apparently it's very common and most people don't suffer while they have it. Toyah was just unlucky because it hit her so hard.

Oh! I missed the first post but am so glad to hear that she is doing better. The roto virus can be quite nasty but it sounds like she's doing well.

((hugs)) to you and the rest of the family. What an ordeal!

Glad she's doing okay. Thanks for letting us know.

You might want to sneak her a decent snack. :)

Schmatz!

Hah, if I sneak her snacks the nurses will be very cross with me. They were already bending backwards to meet Toyah's eclectic eating habits.

Toyah is clamouring for breadrolls with raw minced meat - not quite what the hospital recommends for little ladies with rotavirus. I actually gave them the only type of bread that Toyah will eat. It's a very nice hospital, very cheerful, with huge amounts of books and toys for kids. Today they even had clowns. We were very pleased with the overall treeatment.

For me it cost 15 bucks per day to stay there, but that included meals and a very decent cot in her room. They had tea making facilities, Toyah had a TV in her room, they brought in a huge toy kitchen... very nice.

I hope that Toyah can come home soon.

Also, I'm beginning to think that the daycare she goes to may be a little negligent when it comes to hygiene. Too many problems lately...

*resolves to talk to daycare staff about it*

Wow, that actually sounds fairly lovely.

Thankfully, I've never had reason to visit a pediatric ward here...but none of the other hospital wards I've visited have been nearly as nice or helpful.

Stupid healthcare.

But, still - glad it wasn't too terrible.

Well, hubby's tummy is upset, but so far he's gritting his teeth. He has a very important business trip tomorrow and thanks to the family crisis he got SFA done, the poor thing.

You know, these past few months I realla reached a state of mind where I thought: whý, oh why did I decide to raise a family?

But just now I washed Tina's hair and we snuggled, and she is the cutest girl alive. And Toyah too, the devious little princess...

Thanks for the update E. Glad to hear that little Toyah is making a swift recovery. I suspect that she was laid so low by this virus because she never completely recovered from the one that struck before Christmas. (I'm still suffering the after effects of that one myself).

Poor little mite, what with the virus(es) and the head lice and now dangerous nurses with needles - life hasn't been kind to any of you lately.

*thwacks the Powers* Play nice or I'll set my boat crew on you

Yeah, the poor thing has been sick so often, it's unsettling. Believe it or not, she also had worms just before Easter. I'm thinking the daycare hygiene standards must have declined...
Toyah herself seems impressed by the amount of afflictions that hit her lately. She's getting better at remembering to wash her hands and she's seriously considering eating more veggies to stay healthy.

*crosses fingers*

I also found out tonight, as I went through my emails, that my father's health, which had improved for a while, is now failing again. He was at his home for a while, with only brief stops at the nursing home, but now he's moved to the nursing home for good, it seems. *sigh*

I should really phone him tonight, but that means staying up till 2 am. And I'm feeling pretty exhausted...
Maybe tomorrow night.

Yes, viral gastroenteritis is contagious. The viruses that cause gastroenteritis are spread through close contact with infected persons (for example, by sharing food, water, or eating utensils). Individuals may also become infected by eating or drinking contaminated foods or beverages.
How does food get contaminated by gastroenteritis viruses?
Food may be contaminated by food preparers or handlers who have viral gastroenteritis, especially if they do not wash their hands regularly after using the bathroom.
Yes, I would suspect the daycare as well. That's the perfect environment for this type of virus to spread.
So glad things are getting calmer and healthier for all of us. ::hugs::

Well, since I prepare most of our meals, I could be the offender too, even though I wash my hands excessively, especially since the last few infections we had...

Toyah has breakfast at daycare but lunch at home... *shrug*
God knows where all these afflictions come from...

I'm just sick of this, you know? *sigh*

One of my girls got dehydrated when she was three and had to be put on an IV. They sink so fast, it's terrifying, but they bounce back quickly. (My daughter's reaction to the incident that scared me silly was, "I was plugged in, just like a TV set!")

I remember discussing medical care with my other daughter a couple of years ago, and we started talking about infant mortality in Africa. I said that we probably would have lost her sister back then if we hadn't had access to a good hospital, that she would have been one of the statistics if we'd lived in a third-world country. The older girl got furious with me, demanding to know why I said that. I stopped the conversation, but noticed she was a lot nicer to her little sister afterwards.

The little sister was very suspicious of that, but I didn't enlighten her.

*hugs and good wishes to you and your family*
