Two years ago, when I was in Tampa, I spotted something at a Barnes & Noble: poetry magnets for the fridge. White, square magnets with different words on them. Was that just a passing fashion or are those things a common enough thing to buy. I am thinking that these magnet-words might be useful for my English classes, so they can move words around and form sentences, but I'm not sure if this one application warrants spending money on such a magnet set. How many words are there in a set? How much are they?
Or maybe you have another suggestions? Cheap suggestions?
I have a magnetized board on which to stick the words....

I don't own a set myself, but I know lots of people who do. It's pretty easy to find them over here, and as for the cost... perhaps €15-21? Or less? And that's here, it's most probably cheaper in Germany. If it's no rush, I can ask around.

I used to have those, and it was quite frustrating looking for the words I wanted.

You can buy blank sheets of the magnet board and write your own words on it ... it's easy to cut with scissors and may be cheaper than the pre-printed ones.

http://www.fridgepoetry.com/ was where I got mine. You get over 400 words and although I've lost a lot of mine they're wicked good fun :-)

My set was about 10GBP but it varies.

I've seen magnet sheets for sale, and you could buy some peel & stick printer paper & make your own, maybe.

Wait - here ya go. Print directly onto the magnet: http://www.paper-paper.com/magnetic.html

Five 8-1/2 by 11 sheets for $12.

In Germany it's called "Kühlschrankpoesie",but I'm not sure about the English name for that. But I found a link that might help:

There are various smaller sets you can buy related to specific topics, too.

I have a poet friend who had a bunch of different sets, and she'd use them on 4-6 cookie sheets. So as a poet who writes in English, you might find them useful for that as well.

Heh. When I was in college, I had a full wall of metal cabinets, so I had like 10 different themed sets.

My favorites were the 'love' one and the 'shakespearian' one, especially together. (There are few things more fun when you are 19 and having a party than watching people construct eloquent porn in your kitchen.)

I know that they aren't as popular now, but you can still find them.

They're not cheap. I believe the creator of Magnetic Poetry used to cut out words from magazines to use in creative writing excercices. Maybe you could do that and glue them on to your own flat sheet magnets?

They're pretty common - the brand name is Magnetic Poetry, and Amazon has the original set (400 words) for $16.
