I had a job interview today with the Head of the English Department at the TU Braunschweig. And for once I managed to avoid the super modest self destruct sequence. I actually stood up for my successes and exuded confidence. Hurrah! He asked me how I kept my English from going rusty. I told him I chat a lot and watch movies and TV shows in English. I did NOT tell him that writing porn in English is a great way to expand one's horizon and vocabulary. LOL.
Anyway, looks like I'll be teaching Creative Writing in English from October onwards, two lessons a week. I still have to do the paper trail thing, i.e. hand in my cv and certificates, but the fact that he wants my papers means that the whole thing is more or less decided. The money does not come from the University but from a non-profit foundation. Good lord, I'll be teaching at university.
I'd be nervous and doubt myself, except today I attended a course that my ex-lecturer is running, a course that focuses on cultural studies. Two students held a report on vampirism, and one held a report on Buffy. Both reports were utterly superficial - and mostly boring. In two weeks it'll be my turn. My lecturer introduced me as the big Buffy expert. *chuckles* I am supposed to talk about fanfic as a result of modern technology - but I actually intend to give examples from vidding and photomanipulation too. It's going to be fun. :-)
Only one thing is truly annoying. I have no clue where my BA certificate is. Hubby and I just spent 2 hours digging through the house and we found all sorts of interesting things (we are not very organized when it comes to papers), but not my certificate. I know I saw it recently, but I have no clue where. So keep your fingers crossed that my subconscious will unearth the location tonight, in my sleep, as I'm supposed to hand the damn certificate in ASAP, i.e. tomorrow.

And the creative writing course will probably ignore the subject of fanfic, unless the participants express a particular interest in devoting a session to fanfic. I will have to focus on characterisation, plot, beginnings and endings, manuscript formatting, etc... :-)

Date: 2005-06-21 11:55 am (UTC)And yeah, I intend to get a lot of enjoyment out of it. I will channel my favorite English teacher - she was an honest, blunt, but very dedicated and enthusiastic teacher, revered and feared. :-)

Date: 2005-06-21 01:04 am (UTC)and so are we. I expect updates on the lame ass mistakes they make. Is Angel the one with a soul or is Spike? WAM!!! Go to the back of the line, no soup for you.

Date: 2005-06-21 12:01 pm (UTC)Not quite how it will happen. The creative writing course which starts in October will not focus on fanfic or anything Buffy but on writing techniques, semantics, plot, characterisation...
The seminar in two weeks, where I hold a report, is more of a lecture and I'll talk about fanfic in more general terms... :-(
But I'll definitely keep you guys posted if anything interesting comes up in either case. :-)
Thank you.

Date: 2005-06-21 03:32 am (UTC)This is so awesome Steffi! I want to say I'm really proud of you, but whenever people say that to me I alwasys think, "Who are you, my Dad?" so I won't, but even so this is the coolest thing ever. And you were very good with the seminar at Writercon. Everyone said so. You are incredibly articulate and honest and funny (oh, you don't think you're funny, but you are:-) This is going to be so great for you, I know it.
Love K

Date: 2005-06-21 12:05 pm (UTC)I am pleased that this course will challenge me in a new way. We grow with our challenges and I haven't felt very grow-y lately. I will have moments of doubt, I know, my confidence is like the tide, it comes and goes, but your kind words are a great help. *hug*
I often think about you - whenever I look at Spike in his wonderful shirt. ;-)

Thank you
My creative writing course wants to know about boring stuff, like plot...
Although I'm quite determined to treat the cultural studies course to Sisabet's Closer. Heee.
