Hunting Trip

Every summer, when the other kids went off to summer camp to sit round campfires, roast marshmallows on sticks, and listen to ghost stories, we melted pawnbroker silver into bullets, and went hunting with Dad.

Every summer, Sammy’d yell at Dad, but after a day or two, he’d always chill, too good at hunting to not enjoy himself.

One summer, when several boys went missing, Dad sent us to camp. We told ghost stories and roasted marshmallows. We also hunted down the vengeful spirit of a bullied boy, and salted and roasted his bones.

Sam never mentioned summer camp again.

Oh, this was such a lovely surprise and what a perfect drabble!

You really captured the gulf between them and normality. Sam mustn't have had any illusions left by the age of ten ::sigh::

I wonder why Dean's so much more content in what he does? Don't think it's a lack of imagination exactly...

Yeah, poor boys. I am not entirely sure if Dean is really content. He too harbours resentment. I think he sometimes wishes he could have had Sam's eductation. He tells himself he's better off without it, but deep down he too feels like he missed out on something. He just taught himself not to cry over spilled milk, I guess. That's what I like about him, he pust all his energy into the things he feels he can change.

Anyway, I'm glad you enjoy your drabble. :-)
