I just watched the pilot of the new show Castle, and I LOVED it. It was fun! In a way that Dollhouse isn't. It's great to see Nathan Fillion, I loved Castle's family, and I really liked the detective. Good banter. Will definitely watch the next few epis.
Dollhouse is a fascinating show. Eliza Dushku is awesome, more versatile than I expected. The show has a few problems, I think it would be better if the epis were 10 minutes shorter, but I like what I see. The cop plot seems a waste of time, it's problematic keeping separate plot lines going, even if they intersect in the character of Victor. I "like" Topher, the epitome of the irresponsilble geek/scientist. The actor is very good. I'm intrigued by the plot arc with Alpha. But something is missing, and I can't put my finger on it. The whole slavery theme is disconcerting, and it's meant to be, but while the show rejects the use of real people (even if wiped) as sexual slaves or disposable set of skills, it still tries to fascinate its audience with a mix of sex, violence and degradation. I'm not sure how I feel about that. I will continue to watch the show, because I'm curious where they are taking this.
The other show that I watch as soon as I can get my hands on a new epi is SCC, but lately I haven't enjoyed the show as much as I used to. Maybe that's because my favourite characters are Derek and Cameron. The plot around the blown up facility hasn't really worked for me.
BTW, I have been away from LJ for purely naughty reasons: we are now the proud owners of a PS3 and I've been playing Oblivion IV instead of doing anything userful with my life. :-)

Date: 2009-03-18 06:21 pm (UTC)It's a fine line Joss is walking here, I'm not comfortable with it, yet willing to see where it goes. The whole show is very exploitative about ED's body. The whole no persona aspect makes it difficult to connect with Echo the way the audience could connect with Buffy. I hope the characters develop more, er, lacking a better word, warmth? After ep 4 I was almost done with it, but ep 5 was quite promising, it even had some funny moments. We'll see where it goes. Ah, and I wish I could have subtitles, sometimes it's hard to follow :(

Dollhouse, my problem is that it's too specific. Joss & Eliza talk about how it's a metaphor for Hollywood, where everything is about being fake. News flash! We're all fake! This past episode was the only one that seemed to suggest that everybody wears some kind of mask (thank you, Tim Minear). If they go with that, I think it'll be OK. Or get canceled just as it starts to get good. Sigh.
And SCC should be the Solely Cameron Chronicles. I'm a lot more interested in the robot than any actual human. She's more sympathetic.
Take a break from Oblivion and try Fallout 3. Same developer, and I'm hooked like it's crack.

Date: 2009-03-19 06:53 am (UTC)How nice to hear from you!!!!!
Yup, Castle is shallow, but enjoyable, and Nathan Fillion is a blast. :-)
We kind of enjoy Chuck, even if it's sometimes silly. Maybe it's because I like Adam Baldwin, and the nerds at the Buymore.
Like I said, I find Dollhouse interesting, especially since the bad guys who hire out the dolls are not as two-dimensional as they initially appeared. I am pretty sure the show won't get a second season, but I will watch it until that happens. Joss may still be good for a few surprises....
Cameron rocks!!!
I would write more, but I'm off to work now. 8 hours straight of staring at 8000 lines of excel spreadsheets, containing German and English product descriptions, fixing typing errors, rearranging information and correcting old and flawed translations. After those 8 hours, a carrot beats me intellectually. ;-)
Fallout 3? Really? Well, I still have lots of quests to do in Oblivion, but I may buy Fallout 3 once I'm through. If it's that good, there will be a platinum edition.
Like I said, it's great to hear from you!!!!
