Downton Abbey

I just stumbled over Downton Abbey and LOOOOVE it! Takes me back to the days when I'd religiously watch Upstairs Downstairs when it first aired in Germany in 1975. I was 12 then, and really loved the show.
*sighs happily*
I also found out that there's a new Jane Eyre movie in the pipeline with the memorable Michael Fassbender as Rochester. Sounds extremely promising. *is happy*
Raise your hand if you're also a fan of period shows/movies!
What's your favourite period show moment?
I love all the Donald Sutherland scenes in Pride and Prejudice.
And Margaret Rutherford in the b/w Lawrence Olivier Pride and Prejudice.
And every single scene with Alan Rickman in Sense and Sensibility.

Date: 2011-09-23 11:02 am (UTC)I very much enjoyed 2008s version of Sense and Sensibility by the Beeb. I love the use of colour and locations, esp. Barton Cottage. I also quite enjoy how much it is clearly influenced on the Ang Lee movie. I do prefer the Brandon from the movie though. David Morrissy is a bit... idk, he doesn't work for me. There is some great use of camera techniques with him and Marianne however.

Haven't seen the 2008 version, but I'll try to get my DVD rental to send it to me, now that you've recced it.
Have you seen Lost in Austen? Totally brilliant!
I also love The Secret Garden as one of my favourite period films. So beautiful! And I watch Little Lord Fauntleroy every Christmas. I love love love the conversation between the old Earl and Mrs Errol about politeness.
Little Princess is also a great pleasure. Lovely use of colour metaphor.
And I enjoy Sherlock Holmes movies, too.
As you can see, if I leave the thought to simmer for a moment, I can come up with a handful of non-Austen movies. :)

I really enjoy Agatha Christie adaptations. I do like Sherlock Holmes but I'm more likely to choose the Marple and then the Poirot over Sherlock if they were on TV. :) I'm not sure about the new Marples though. :S
