estepheia: (It's only a movie...)

After poring over this problem for days, I finally decided to ask you guys for help.
My novel has been finished for quite some time, and I've mailed the outline to publishing companies, without success, but now I want to enter the full manuscript in a competiton. Each chapter opens with a more or less famous movie quote that fits the events that follow. Only one pivotal chapter towards the end has no quote yet, and somehow I can't find one... Maybe you guys can help?

Movie should be well-known, should be PG13-ish or under, ideally a movie that a 12-y-o boy may have seen.
Situation: one boy helps another boy climb out of a celler where he's been locked up, while the house is on fire...
Whole novel is about friendship and courage. Possible themes: climbing, fire, buddy moment....

It would even help if you don't know an exact quote but remember a scene that fits, in that case I can go to imdb and hunt for a suitable quote.

Your help would be greatly appreciated. :)

Stand by Me?
Spiderman?
"Never tell me the odds" Star Wars
"I am Superman" Iron Giant

Hopefully this gives you some ideas. :0)

Thank you, poshcat. :)
I have a couple of starwars quotes for other chapters, but that quote is actually very good, I might add that one.

Stand by Me is awesome, and to some extent one of the things that inspired me, but it's not something I can quote verbatim and hope for young readers to relate to. :(
Spiderman might work. Will check out the quote databases... :)

Thank you!

Does Harry Potter have a spell for fire? Would it fit the tone? Might be a bit glib for the seriousness of the boys' situation...

Thank you. Yes HP works, but I'm using a couple of Harry Potter quotes already, and yeah, I have to be careful not to make it too light-hearted.
I also quote Lord of the Rings in a previous chapter (Galadriel's words to Frodo, that the task has been given to him and him alone...)
It's really difficult to find the right tone for the chapter... *sigh*

Might not be entirely appropriate but how about:

I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Jesus, does anyone?

from Stand By Me.

Great quote, thank you (I love that movie!). Alas, it doesn't fit the chapter - and it's difficult to explain why. It's the wrong tone, too wistful and nostalgic - the chapter is hectic, almost panicky, and the two boys aren't really good friends; in fact, they are rivals, yet the hero helps the other boy anyway, because it's the right thing to do.

Just couldn't resist quoting one of my favorites! Hope you find something great!

Hmm... Is Donnie Darko rated higher than PG13? The teacher in that one said: "This famous linguist once said that of all the phrases in the English language, of all the endless combinations of words in all of history, that Cellar Door is the most beautiful." Might be interesting. Otherwise...maybe something from The Sandlot (http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/The_Sandlot)?

Thank you for your help. Good quote, but a little bit too intellectual at that point in the book. Remindes me that I should watch Donnie Darko again...
Cheers!

For a basement theme, there's always Wayne's World (which, as a comedy, can be a counterpoint to drama). Here's the IMDB quotes page:

Wayne's World Quotes

Maybe:
"Yep, this is definitely the kind of apartment I'll have if I ever move out of my parents' basement."

Hi, Mike, thanks for your help. I decided to go with Starwars after all, but you're right, Wayne's world is cool and offers great lines.
Why does your quote remind me of Xander, I wonder...

:)

Sam: I made a promise, Mr Frodo. A promise. "Don't you leave him Samwise Gamgee." And I don't mean to. I don't mean to. - Fellowship of the Ring?

Are you still writing?

May Parker (Spiderman 2):
I believe there's a hero in all of us, that keeps us honest, gives us strength, makes us noble..."

Rachel Dawes (Batman Begins):
...it's not who you are underneath, it's what you do that defines you.

Probably too non-specific. Wish I could be of more help. Good luck with the competition.

Yup, very suitable - but not for the chapter. I think I'll snag the first and put it in front of the book, because it really really fits! Thank you!!!

How about Finding Nemo:
Dory: Come on, trust me on this one.
Marlin: Trust you?
Dory: Yes, trust, it's what friends do.
