estepheia: (Doctor Who)

We've just finished watching S4 (4 epis in one sitting) and I can say with pride: I have successfully turned my daughters into Doctor Who fans. :) They both adore Ten (well, who wouldn't) and they love Captain Jack. #1 loves Donna, #2 loves Rose, both hate Donna's mom....
K. has a Ten wallpaper on her computer where he's holding a cat in his hand, and she found a band on youtube who base their music and all their lyrics on the Doctor Who canon. V. has started reading (German) fanfic (something with a pre time war parrallell universe with the doctor and the master... )
I must say, I'd forgotten how good S4 is. Definitely my favourite.
Oh, and have you seen this? K. found it....

One thing I hate about myself is that I'm more of a glass-half-empty person, but DW has a way of making things better.... Never fails to cheer me up....

S4 is my favourite as well. And I love that outtake from Human Nature!

*snap*
I was wondering, do you think the older series, i.e. pre-nine series are still worth watching or do they appear very dated?
I've never watched any of the old epis, I never got round to it, and besides, none of my friends have them on DVD, so I can't borrow them.

Oh very much so, considering you have 40 years of canon to choose from. Mind you, not every episode etc., just like with every other show. And the dating question is different for each Doctor. For example, I'd never start a newbie with the show's very beginning, because that's incredibly slooooooooow, and also, the characterisation of the characters isn't yet what it will be later, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't reccomend First Doctor adventures. The Aztecs is the One serial I'd reccommend any time. (BTW, bear in mind that the way these old series worked as in 20 minutes installments, so if what you get on dvd is very long, it's simply because it's all those 20 minutes put together to make two hours or more. :) The Aztecs is a great showcase for a historical, all the characters at that point had been defined, the One/Cameca relationship is echoed many regenerations later with Ten and Madame de Pompadour, and it's a fantastic showcase for Barbara (Ian and Barbara being the first companions, with Susan as the Doctor's granddaughter something between companion and not) and presents the very first "should we change history, and if not, why not?" debate.

Or: The Third Doctor introduction serial, Spearheads from Space is a great point to start, because that was actually meant as an intro point for newbiews - this was when the show switched to colour, and it radically changed the format because Three starts his tenure stranded on Earth (and not happy about it at all), working with UNIT. The Brig had been introduced a bit earlier in Two's day but this is where he becomes a regular character, he and Liz Shaw are just a bit Mulder and Scully only I like the Brig better than I ever liked Mulder, and the Brig being the only boss the Doctor ever worked for (reluctantly, but still) says a lot in itself. (Oh, and RTD paid homage to Spearheads from Space in his own re-start of the show, because Spearheads from Space introduced the Autons who are the villains in Rose. The plastic walking dolls were just as creepy the first time around.)

There are a lot of other serials I'd rec, but these two would be good to start Old Who with.

You might want to also try Genesis of the Daleks. It's a Four story, which means it has the familiar hat/scarf Doctor that most people associated with Doctor Who pop culture-wise before the current series. Plus, it's got Sarah Jane, and the Daleks, so there's a lot that's familiar.
