I found out a new epi of John Doe aired and is available on Kazaa. I'm downloading at a snail's pace. It's a dumb show, but they surprised me by bumping off one of the major characters. Compared to Firefly it's utter shite. I'm not sure why I watch this show.

I wonder what happened to Smallville?. Shouldn't there be new episodes? I didn't like the growing distance between Lex and Clark that I saw in the last few episodes. But I like the nurture vs nature debate. Also the fact that now Clark's real father is in the picture - at least via his message. The girls are still pretty but boring as hell. The two main families are intriguing. I find Clark's parents slap-worthy, but I actually enjoy being annoyed by them. So, when is the next epi due?

The next Angel looks interesting - according to the promos. I look forward to it (no, don't worry I am not going to spoil anyone).

The Hubby and I finished watching 24 a few days ago. Interesting how it's about the destruction of three families. I look forward to the second season.

You, too? Thank god it's not just me who's become enthralled by John Doe's stupid characters and poor writing. Yet I can't stop. I mean, something about the show must appeal to me, but for the life of me, I can't say what it is. We should form a support group: John Doe Anonymous. The support group name is better than the show, if I do say so myself.

Yeah. True.
I kind of like the barkeeper, he has a nice voice.
I've seen the actress who plays the cop before but I can't remember where. That really bugs me.

I'd much rather watch Pretender - I really liked Miss Parker.

Can't help you with the cop lady, but the barkeep guy is someone at least vaguely famous - not anyone I can place, of course.

I never watched that show. What was it about?

Pretender

Pretender was similar to John Doe.
The main character, Jarod (played by Michael T. Weiss) had the ability to blend into different identities and professions. He would research medicine for a few days and would then be able to perform operation. He picked up skills and mannerisms very quickly, like a human chameleon.

A criminal organisation had kidnapped him as a child and experimented on him, training him to be a human simulator, using him to plan assassinations, sabotage or save apollo 13.

He manages to escape and goes looking for his family, about which he knows almost nothing, but the organisation tries to capture him again. During his travels he helps other people in need by pretending to be a doctor, an FBI agent, a military officer etc.

Secondary characters are Sidney, the fatherly pychiatrist who did some of the experiments on him but who also cares for him. Miss Parker, who works for the organization (she too has family issues, as her Dad runs the organization - she also tries to investigate the death of her mother which is linked to young Jarod's fate). Miss Parker is supposed to hunt Jarod down. Then there's Brutes, the geeky computer expert, a friendly if awkward personality who is loyal to Sidney rather than the organisation.

Sidney, Miss Parker and Brutes are the hunters, Jarod is the prey. As the show progresses many secrets are unearthed. An episode was usually made up of 90% plot-of-the-week and 10% arc story.

Miss Parker was played by Andrea Parker, who is played a lawyer in JAG. Sidney was played by Patrick Bauchau, who played a role in Kindred.

It was a pleasant show. Because Jarod spent most of his life in a lab he tackles life with great hunger and child-like innocence and charme. He relishes eating his first donut, flying.

The show was cancelled after several (3?) seasons. Afterwards two longer TV films were made but I found those confusing. That may have worked with Alien Nation but IMHO not in this case.

Wow, thanks for the detailed description. It sounds like a fun show - a bit like Now and Again a show I really liked that got canceled after one season. I'm going to see if I can dig up any old episodes - maybe that will get me off the John Doe crack.
