stupid codecs

I have two avi files which my Windows Media Player claims it needs extra codecs for. When I go to the DivX site I end up utterly confused. I downloaded the DivXplayer, but that's not really a solution. Is there some kind of trick? What do I have to download where? Which version do I need? I don't want to reigster anywhere... Help?
This goes way over my head.

Date: 2005-06-28 12:54 am (UTC)There are literally hundreds of different codecs. An .avi is not necessarily a DivX file. It can be anything. Probably those files are encoded with XVid, the other popular video codec for .avi files.
Usually XVid is playable by default, if you have DivX and MPEG4 codecs installed, but during encoding you can set so many parameters that even a DivX or XVid is incompatible to some (older)players. Just today I read that there is a new version of a popular encoding tool available that produces files that are incompatible to most players. Files encoded with this software need fixing before they can be played. If that is the case, you will need a special fix-up tool, or, a different player.
But first things first. Download the GSpot beta from http://www.mpeg-playcenter.com/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownload&cid=16#cat to find out which codecs the files are needing. Then you can download the codec from http://www.codec-download.de/, for example, if it is not DivX or XVid.
Hope this helps.
