stupid codecs

I have two avi files which my Windows Media Player claims it needs extra codecs for. When I go to the DivX site I end up utterly confused. I downloaded the DivXplayer, but that's not really a solution. Is there some kind of trick? What do I have to download where? Which version do I need? I don't want to reigster anywhere... Help?
This goes way over my head.

Right I downloaded GSpot - it claims that the file is trunctuated, but the DviX player can play the first third of it and I am certain I have the whole file. *whine*
Thanks for the links and everything. I still haven't solved my problem but I hope I will. :-)
